My experience in Uganda is versatile. I originally had done some volunteering in Kampala.
Soon after that I was introduced to a organization called Village2Village located in Serere, Uganda.
This organization is involved with different aspects of improving the lives of orphans in a villages. I came onboard to start a clinic up in this region.
Every African country has it's own way of thinking, living, and surviving. Uganda was a hard experience and yet laid the foundation to think bigger. Let's just say with the lack of English speaking persons combined with the lack of electricity made it a bit lonely. I had some hard choices to make and
one of those was to start becoming more intimate with my Jesus. Take away your friends and other things that can be great, but also are a distraction, and you are left with yourself. You start to evaluate your soul, heart, and way of thinking. Once again I had months to dream about Africa and medicine and how I played a role.
The clinic in Uganda was a temporary clinic. It ran while I was there and closed when I left.
The people in Serere walked miles to the clinic and came when the sun rose and left when the sun set. With no electricity the sun is your clock. I had a wonderful friend Gi-Gi working with me on this project. Together she and I saw patients throughout the day and made visits to neighboring huts when word was sent to us that there were sick people that could not walk to the clinic. We also had the chance to take
in two polo children to live with Gi-Gi and I in our hut. Lots of learning took place there and It was a pleasure to serve the people of Serere.
The upcoming vision for Uganda shifts to the Gulu area. Dreams for Africa would like to partner with Touch The World Uganda (an international branch of Touch the World Ministries, USA).
The plan is
to build a clinic in the IDP camps starting in the spring of 2010 after leaving South Africa.
Please read about TTWU and the vision of the clinic.
