I arrived in SA in 2005. I had been a Registered Nurse at that time for 7 years.
In the USA I specialized in Pediatric Intensive Care. I dreamt for years about getting to Africa
to practice some type of medicine. Not knowing how and where God would lead I started in
South Africa by visiting relatives that were involved in an orphanage. So began my journey.
Over the next 4 years I would watch how God can use a simple girl with a simple dream.
I started running a mobile clinic in a small town called Loskop. Though I was involved with different health care projects in this area the mobile clinic was were I really saw my passion come alive.
With HIV and TB being two of the biggest health issues in South Africa, the people are often
home bound due to weakness, sickness, and lack of resources. With a mobile clinic you can
eliminate that problem;
we go to them. It actually became such a joy starting each day not knowing
who I was going to come across that day.
Often the situation is a woman dying of AIDS. Once you find them you begin the process of healing.
Of course this includes many dynamics. The medical part is basic; treat the disease.
Usually this means starting at the beginning with a diagnosis, testing, and then explaining the plan
of care to the person. With a mobile clinic I have the ability to bring the medications to them. In addition,
I am also able to provide them with food, water, clothes, and other basic necessities.
Next, and equally important, is the emotional and spiritual healing. When someone is lost, truly hopeless, and waiting to die they are searching for something or someone to be the answer to all their questions. WOW, I've got that answer. His name is Jesus Christ. He loves these people. They need to know and experience that Love. That is where I get to be Jesus's instrument in Africa. I am given the awesome privilege to provide medical, emotional and spiritual healing to his people in need.
I must confess that I get just as much, if not more, JOY from being there with these precious sick people. Life is hard in Africa but it is simple. You realize who and what really matters in this short time we have here on earth. Africa blessed me with coming to know and understand God in a realm I never knew possible; it changed my life. Now, in almost 2010, as I leave for South Africa again, I go back with greater clarity and bigger dreams. As I resume partnering with Ubuntu Partners and other local organizations,
the goal is to build the mobile clinic back up and to go out every day with more and more success in finding lost people. In addition to the mobile clinic, Dreams for Africa is assisting another standing clinic
in the Loskop area od South Africa. This is an exciting time to see who else
Dreams for Africa will partner with in South Africa. |
