Liberia was my most challenging clinic to set up and yet the most successful,
if you measure
by amount of people seen. In one year of the clinic being open it treated 11,000 sick Liberian people.
I met Oscar James, who is the President of Ahead ministries, back in California when I was working at a children's hospital. I was taking care of his niece and we found a perfect match with each others' ministries. He had a clinic with no one to run it. I had the experience, desire, and had been just looking
for the building and the people. So began the union of ahead ministries and Dreams for Africa.
I moved to Liberia with some money that I had raised for the next clinic. Once settled, I had the opportunity to play many different roles in setting up this clinic; from Officer In Charge to general contractor. In Africa, you play the role that needs to be played; you are not there to only fulfill your job description.
Liberia is a very difficult place to live; given the fact that you are nearly guaranteed malaria.
Now although I had malaria in Uganda, the mosquitoes in Liberia are far more vicious and numerous.
I spent most of my time in Liberia on treatment for active malaria. I will confess that being sick and yet being able to continue working toward the goal of getting this clinic up was one of those times where "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" became my go to verse.
The Cynthia Nelson Clinic in Liberia is now the people of Liberia
under the care of Ahead Ministries.
